Can anyone recommend a good screenwriting program that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars?

Let me start by saying I am recommending none of these solutions. I use Final Draft and haven't tried many of these.

Now that that is out of the way, there is actually a pretty solid list of screenwriting tools available here (including templates for Word that are free):

Also, Scriptbuddy is an online screenwriting tool with a free and pay version:

I purchased Movie Magic online with e-bay. It cost about $90.00 and the program works great. I would recommend it to anyone, novice or seasoned writer.

celtx isn't bad and is crossplatform. I've used it a bit, especially if I'm going to be bouncing a script between my home and work computers. I generally end up moving everything into FD when I'm ready to move beyond the first draft, however. Then again, celtx is a full film production suite (or it's trying to be) not just screenwriting software.

A notepad and pencil are pretty cheap. Other than that, Final Draft is the way to go.

Paid, current IFP.PHX members get a discount on software, including Final Draft: http://www.ifp.org/classifieds/vendor.php?locale=4
